Nick Finzer - EXPOSITION - Release Announcement!

Greetings All!

Since we recorded the album in May of 2012, I've been waiting for the time when I could announce the release! Well, that day is finally here and I am exited to say that on Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013 Exposition will be released! It will be available on my website (www.nickfinzermusic.com) as well as on CD Baby, and many online download retailers including iTunes! Be sure to check back on my website for some samples from the CD, to be posted soon.

The CD features some amazing musicians who I had the privilege to meet and play with at Juilliard:

Lucas Pino - Saxophone
Alex Wintz - Guitar
Samora Pinderhughes - Piano
Dave Baron - Bass
Jimmy Macbride - Drums

That being said, I have two CD Release performances to share with you all. We will be celebrating the release of Exposition here in NYC on Sunday, February 10th, 2013 at The National (50th and Lexington)! There will be two sets of music at 7&830 PM.

Secondly, for all of my friends and family back in Rochester, we will be celebrating Exposition at Lovin'cup (Park Pointe, RIT) on Wednesday, February 13th, 2013! Watch for a personal invite in your inbox! If you are interested in getting an invitation please don't hesitate to join my email list (bottom right hand side of the home page of my website).

Hope to see all of you at one of the CD Release Performances!

Once again I'd like to take the time to recognize, and publicly thank all of the amazing people that contributed to my Kickstarter project this past April! Without all of you, this project would not have been possible!

Montana and Washington, November 2012

Wow! What a great 10 days. I just concluded a whirlwind tour of Northwestern Montana and Eastern Washington, with my non-profit: The Institute for Creative Music. Last summer, my drummer friend Chris Teal and I decided to put our heads together to formalize some of the educational clinics/touring that we had done between 2007 and 2010 and the Institute for Creative Music was born!  You can check out the IfCM at www.ifcmusic.org

Thanks to a generous grant from the Plum Creek Foundation, we were enabled to travel to Kalispell, Montana and work with five high schools there, as well as with the surrounding music community. We presented workshops, clinics, and performances for almost 1400 students, and taught for a combined total of 37.4 hours! We had two appearances in the local papers (with a third on the way), and a big hit was of course, free IfCM stickers! After our time in Montana, we traveled west to Spokane, WA (Chris’ hometown) and had a day of whirlwind visits to Mt. Spokane HS, Eastern Washington University, and Whitworth University. It was a productive tour for sure!

It is an amazing thing to spend time with energetic and passionate music students. Their energy and willingness to try new things (even if they are foreign or challenging) is truly inspiring. We worked with concert bands, orchestras, jazz combos, big bands, and choirs. Each and every one of the students we worked with was improvising and participating in creative music making.

Spending time teaching with the co-director of IfCM Chris Teal, and our teaching artists: Mike Kaupa (trumpet), Chris Ziemba (piano), and Matthew Golombisky (bass) was a real treat. We are excited to be moving ahead with a number of projects to continue the momentum that was started this past week!

End of Summer Update

Greetings!

Here we are at Labor Day weekend, whew! What a summer it has been! Some really exciting things have come up in the last few weeks. The biggest announcement is that I have finished mixing and mastering my CD, and the project will be available for pre-release download to my Kickstarter backers by the end of this week!

Second, the Institute for Creative Music will be traveling out to Montana in November to conduct workshops at five different schools in the Flathead Valley. Really looking forward to this!

Stay tuned - more updates soon!

A busy August approaches!

Greetings all!

This summer has been filled with adventures already, including two weeks at BAK Middle School for the Juilliard Jazz residency there, a week on the Queen Mary 2 with the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra, I graduated from Juilliard with my Masters degree, and recorded my CD of all original material! The summer is only half way through, and there's a bunch of exciting things coming up.

The last two weeks I have led my quintet at a great restaurant on the east side, called The National (inside the Hotel Benjamin). They have started a weekly Sunday music series there called "The National Sessions" with jazz groups performing each week! I'm excited to be a part of the rotation there, look out for more dates there this summer!

This week I'll be off to Nashua, NH for a private event with a band I've worked with for a long time (when I was living in Rochester), the Po Boys Brass Band. Additionally I'll be starting the work of mixing/mastering the CD project!

Most exciting I think is going to be co-leading a quartet with a great friend of mine form here in the city, Lucas Pino, out in his hometown (and where my parents currently live) of Phoenix, AZ. We have four performances lined up over the course of the week we will be there (8/2-8/8) check out the event page over on Facebook, or the calendar widget on the webpage for more detailed info about the performances! The feature performance there will be at JazzinAZ.org 's new venue called The Nash! We are grateful for the support of Joel and the whole organization at JazzinAZ.

Directly after, I'll be headed to Indianapolis for a gig with the great trumpeter Al Chez and his Brothers of Funk big band! We're headlining the official after party for Drum Corps International's 40th reunion there in Indy!

Lastly, I'll be in my hometown of Rochester, NY on Thursday August 16th at Tala Vera for a concert of my original music from the new CD! I hope to see all of my Rochester friends and fellow musicians that night. It's always great to come back to play for the hometown crowd. And during all of this, I'll hopefully get the album completed and sent out to all of the Kickstarter Backers before the summer is up!

Thanks again for all your support! I look forward to seeing you all around soon!

Recording!

Greetings All!

First of all, a HUGE Thank You needs to go out to all of the amazing people who backed my Kickstarter Project! It was a great success, and I'm moving ahead with the recording! We'll be recording on my birthday - May 22, couldn't think of a better way to celebrate than to be playing my music with such great musicians:

Lucas Pino - tenor sax
Alex Wintz - guitar
Dave Baron - bass
Samora Pinderhughes - piano
Jimmy Macbride - drums

This week the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra is hitting at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola with the great Mr. Frank Wess, an honor and a privilege to share the stage with him every night! The best part is getting to here is version of Strayhorn's "Lush Life" - so killin'. Then it's time for juries and the end of my last semester of my masters degree!

See you all on the other side (June!),

Nick

Utah/Las Vegas

This week I'll be hitting the road with the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra, directed by Mr. James Burton! We'll be heading out to Snow College in Ephraim, UT followed by a stop in Ivens, UT and then winding up in Las Vegas! Looking forward to reconnect with musicians I met out that way last year and this past summer! Then it's back to the grind for the last half of a semester...

Institute for Creative Music

Hi Everyone!

I'm headed to Rochester, NY this weekend for a weekend of events with The Institute for Creative Music! IfCM is a non-profit entity I formed with drummer Chris Teal last summer. Check out www.ifcmusic.org for more information, and for the full calendar of this weekend's events!

March is shaping up to be a busy month! Next week I'm off to Utah with Juilliard for a few days of concerts and workshops at Snow College, continuing on to Ivans, and finishing in Las Vegas. Looking forward to seeing some of the students from this past summer and last years JJO tour!

March 31st I will be back in Rochester to play a concert with Al Chez and the Brothers of Funk!

In other news, last weekend I recorded a new record with Joe McDonough, Chris Ziemba, Dave Baron, and Jimmy Macbride! Transcriptions and tunes in the spirit of the great two trombone quintets of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding. Stay tuned for that!

Lastly I just wanted to mention the new link to my opine store at the bottom of the site, check back there for new charts, CDs and other things coming soon!

Hope to see you all soon!

Masters Degree Recital

Greetings!

I am excited to present my Masters Degree Recital at the Juilliard School on Tuesday February 7th, 2012! The recital will take place in Paul Hall, and features some of my favorite musicians that I have had the pleasure of working with during my time at Juilliard.

Lucas Pino - Saxophone
Alex Wintz - Guitar
Samora Pinderhughes - Piano
Dave Baron - Bass
Jimmy Macbride - Drums

We'll be playing all brand new arrangements of three originals and a number of standards. The recital is free and open to the public. I hope you can join us for the performance, I'd love to share this night of music with you!

I hope to see you then!
